Credit cards – what alternative do I have?

With the evolution of eCommerce websites it has proved easier and easier to pay for goods and services using credit cards. Despite this, credit cards also make it very easy to accumulate large amounts of debts, which could potentially threaten the financial wellbeing of the card-user.

For this simple reason, and with the recent economic uncertainty, a large number of people are increasingly reluctant to take out credit cards and miss out on the benefits they have to offer.

Fortunately there are other types of cards available, which allow you the convenience of a credit card without opening yourself to the risks associated with one. Namely, pre-paid cards:

Pre-Paid Cards

Pre-Paid cards have been around for the past few years and bear many similarities to the credit card. However, unlike credit cards they need to be pre-loaded or topped-up with funds before they can be used. Much in the same way that a pre-paid electricity metre or pay-as-you-go mobile phones. Once the card has beeen credited with funds it can be used in the same situation as a regular credit card.

Despite the obvious advantage, in that you will be unable to build up debt, making it risk free, the main issue is remembering to keep it topped-up and, in some cases, a transaction fee as well as a monthly charge for using the card.
